KULCHA Symposium Presenter, Jorge De León: Belize Maya writing club
My name is Jorge De León, a tour Guide for over 16 years. I fell in love with our history, especially with the ancient Maya Culture and developed an interest on the ancient Maya writing. After attending many lectures and going through many books on glyphs, I still wanted more. After attending a workshop organized by NICH it all came together and I decided to start sharing what I had learned. That is when I start the Maya Writing Club in 2016. In want to thank Mount Carmel Highschool for allowing me to come in and share my knowledge with the students. Since then I have been able to reach several communities throughout Belize.
About the Presentation
THEMATIC SESSION: TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS - SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2021 FROM 8:45 AM TO 10:00 AM (UTC-6:00)
First, I would like to talk about the birth of the Maya Writing Club and my personal journey in reaching an understanding of how this ancient Maya writing system works. As a Club we set several goals every year with the prime objective of going out to educate and share what we have learnt. We have been able to reach communities in the North and South of Belize to share this knowledge. Before the pandemic we had several meetings and were in process of starting another Club in San Ignacio along with One of my students who is going to Sacred Heart Jr. College. My work at the schools can not be possible with out the interest of the teachers. I wish to see groups in every District and town but especially in our Maya communities. Getting them involved in learning this amazing ancient Maya writing system would be awesome.
