Heritage Education Network Belize is hosting our fourth annual Belize K.U.L.C.H.A. Symposium from October 23rd to 25th, 2024. During this three-day event, we will come to you virtually and host our live sessions! We will come together to present and discuss the impact, influence and effects of Belize’s Sustainable Orange Economy nationally and internationally.
K.U.L.C.H.A. stands for ‘Keeping Up with Language, Culture, Heritage and the Arts, which means that we will host a wide variety of presentations relating to 1) language, literature, and poetry, 2) culture and cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), archaeology, anthropology, 3) heritage and history (including natural heritage), and 4) fine and creative arts in Belize.
We welcome submissions from all interested individuals or groups in line with this year’s theme. We look forward to seeing you there!
What is the Orange Economy?
“The creative economy (also known as the orange economy) is an evolving concept based on the contribution and potential of creative assets to contribute to economic growth and development. It embraces economic, cultural and social aspects interacting with technology, intellectual property and tourism objectives (United Nations Economist Network).”
With this in mind, this year’s overall theme aims to look a the creative economies of the past, present and future in order to understand ancient and modern examples to ensure a sustainable future.
We encourage presenters to connect and rethink their research in light of what it means to the creative sector. For example, in Archaeology one can talk about material culture creative influences or specific creative economies of the past as well as public archaeology and modern representation. Similarly, presentations can relate to the topic of economy, by presenting material culture, art and a creative product and its history or, for example, looking at intellectual property rights, tourism or trade.
International topics and research are welcome as we aim to place Belize on a global scale and encourage the building of international networks through knowledge sharing.

What is KULCHA?
KULCHA stands for Keeping up with Language, Culture, Heritage and the Arts. It is a virtual symposium organised annually that aims to bring together academics, early career researchers, citizen scientists, activists, artists, and indigenous or community representatives to celebrate Belizean culture and heritage.
The Symposium is streamed online on Facebook and YouTube every year to ensure complete and FREE access to all presentations, and to give an opportunity to all interested persons to engage in the comments. We also make efforts to broadcast the symposium on local Belizean television channels.

The Belize KULCHA Symposium Story
#belizekulchasymposium
In light of the many disruptions caused by COVID-19, the first Belize KULCHA Symposium was held online from September 1st to 3rd, 2021, to create a virtual space for scholars and interested persons to present their ideas for lay and academic audiences, alike. Through the symposium, we hope to encourage interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue in the fields of culture and heritage on a publicly and perpetually accessible platform.
Participation of young researchers and activists is highly encouraged. We welcome presentations and case studies in Language, Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Anthropology and the Arts from any discipline related to Belizean culture. In our view, all disciplines relate to these themes!
The Belize KULCHA symposium is organized by Heritage Education Network Belize, a 501c3 non-profit, non-governmental organization. Access to the symposium is free, but donations to support HENB’s cause are greatly appreciated.
