There are a lot of small things you can do in-house and you don’t even need to make a big effort. These things only require small changes in your management routine, but they make a big impact.

  • Practice water conservation (i.e. towel & linen re-use policy, rainwater harvesting)

  • Implement energy-efficient policies (i.e. lights out when leaving rooms, switch to LED lights, carbon offset.

  • Manage and reduce waste (i.e. serve à la carte versus buffet-style).

  • Compost.

  • Avoid excess packaging (i.e. purchase bulk, limit single-use items - especially plastics - through reusables).

  • Dispose of solid and toxic waste properly.

  • Do not use chemical-based products (i.e. cleaning solutions). Make your own!

  • Show and educate guests on the best practices to preserve the environment (i.e. 'Leave No Trace' motto).

  • Implement responsible policies if interacting with wildlife (i.e. safe distances, no feeding, no touching).

2. Support the Local Community

Supporting the local community is essential to keep the tourism dollars in the country. People you support will also have a chance to give back to the community and become resilient sustainability activists.

  • Hire local staff and practice fair employment policies.

  • Allow employees to participate in sustainability initiatives.

  • Donate to or participate in community development projects.

3. Protect Culture & Heritage

Needless to say, cultural heritage is a large part of tourism. So, let’s encourage visitors to chose businesses and experiences where they can learn more.

  • Educate guests on cultural norms of the destination.

  • Display cultural roots around your establishment.
